Mr. Phillip Ray McCargo Sr., age 72 of Jacksonville, passed away unexpectedly while vacationing with family in West Virginia. Mr. McCargo was born in Jacksonville to the late Ray and Jerlean French McCargo and was a 1969 graduate of Paxon High School. A Vietnam veteran, he was proud of his service in the United States Army. Upon his military discharge, he served the Duval County School Board in a supervisory position for thirty-three years until his retirement. Mr. McCargo was a devout Christian and was dedicated to his wife and family. He led them as a godly man of faith and was a faithful member of Otis Road Church of God. Known to have a great sense of adventure, he loved spending time on the water in his airboat with friends or being outdoors driving his side-by-side. He is survived by his wife of fifty three years: Janet McCargo; son: Phillip Ray McCargo Jr.; grandchildren: Kala (Brandon) Humphries, Chase McCargo and Nicole McCargo and great granddaughter: Caroline Ray Humphries, all of Jacksonville; brothers-in-law: Arthur (Sue) Williams and Robert Williams, all of Jacksonville; and sisters-in-law: Mary (Bill) Sage and Linda Rikard, all of Jacksonville, Terry (Thomas) Braddock of Macclenny and Carla McCargo of Elkton, Florida. Numerous nieces, nephews and other family members also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother: Stanley McCargo; sister-in-law: Carolyn Williams, and brother-in-law: David Rikard. A celebration of his life will be held 11:00am, Friday, October 27, 2023, at Otis Road Church of God with Pastor Stephen Thomas officiating. The McCargo family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Otis Road Church of God.
