Mr. James Earl Jeffries, age 89 of Jacksonville, passed away Saturday, September 24, 2022. He was born in Russellville, Alabama to the late Edward and Hattie Helms Jeffries. Upon high school graduation, Mr. Jeffries enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and during his service was a recipient of the Naval Occupation Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. At the completion of his service, he began a forty-year career at Great Southern Trucking Company, which would become P.I.E. Trucking by the time of his retirement. Mr. Jeffries was a member of Old Plank Road Baptist Church and an avid Florida Gator football and baseball fan. He enjoyed working in his yard and listening to old time radio. He looked forward to Fridays and going out to eat and spending the day with Ms. Vera, his loving wife of thirty-seven years. Mr. Jeffries is survived by his wife: Vera Jeffries of Jacksonville; daughter: Brenda (Richard) Bertino of Jacksonville; grandson: Bobby Bertino of Jacksonville; children: William (Linda) Spears Jr. of Sebring, Lonnie W. Spears of Jacksonville, Susan Altman of Orange Park, and Karen Spears of Jacksonville; and numerous other grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Teresa Greene, and his brothers: Hollis, Jack, and Bobby. Funeral services will be held, 12:00pm, Monday, October 3, 2022, at Old Plank Road Baptist Church with Pastor Larry McGinley officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church and there will be a time of food and fellowship following the service. Mr. Jeffries will be laid to rest at the Jacksonville National Cemetery at 1:00pm, Tuesday, October 4, 2022.
