Vernon Thomas
Proctor
December 6, 1952 – April 3, 2026
Vernon "Tom" Thomas Proctor, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and cherished friend, passed away unexpectedly on April 3, 2026, in Jacksonville, Florida. Born on December 6, 1952, Tom’s life was deeply marked by his love for family, his faith, and his unwavering commitment to those he held dear.
Tom’s passing came shortly after the loss of his beloved wife, Ann Sutherland Proctor, to whom he was married since 1977. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership. When Tom married Ann, she was a single mother to two daughters, Alice Sutherland and Susan Sutherland (Williams), whom Tom lovingly embraced as his own. He was their devoted “daddy” from that moment forward, always ready to shower them with affection and care. Tom’s devotion to his family was a defining characteristic, as was his joy in spoiling Ann and their daughters.
A man of strong faith and patriotism, Tom was known as the rock of his family and a proud Christian. His service in the United States Navy, where he served on the USS Texas as a machinist mate, was a significant chapter in his young adult life. It was during his time in the Navy that he met Ann, also a sailor, beginning a lifelong journey together built on mutual respect and love.
Tom spent 44 years working as a master mechanic for Penske, bringing the same dedication and precision to his profession as he did to his personal life. He had a genuine passion for barbecuing, sharing his culinary talents generously with family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers. The quality of Tom’s barbecue was unmatched, often turning simple gatherings into memorable celebrations.
His love of decorating was another cherished tradition. Each October and December, Tom transformed his yard with Halloween and Christmas decorations that grew more elaborate over the years. These displays brought joy not only to his family but also to his neighbors, who eagerly anticipated the spectacle each season.
Born to Thomas “Charlie” Proctor and later raised by his stepmother Marie Pressnell from the age of five, Tom shared a unique and enduring bond with Marie, whom he considered his true mother. Their close relationship, maintained by frequent communication, was a source of mutual love and support throughout his life.
Tom’s generous spirit extended beyond his immediate family. He was often the one to cook for major holidays, a reassuring presence at gatherings, and a “Car-Angel” for his granddaughter Brynne Williams and stepdaughter Susan Williams, offering help with their vehicles whenever needed. Though strong and quiet by nature, his love was evident in every action and sacrifice made for those he cherished.
Tom is survived by his mother, Marie Pressnell; his sisters, Sara Kay Proctor and Susan Carlisle; his stepdaughter, Susan Williams; his granddaughter, Brynne Williams; his grandson, Ian Sutherland; and his great-granddaughters, Ripley and Maxine. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Sutherland Proctor; his father, Thomas “Charlie” Proctor; his stepdaughter Alice Sutherland King; and mother-in-law Leona Gimbert.
A memorial service to honor Vernon Thomas Proctor’s remarkable life will be held on May 11, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Warren Funeral Services, located at 105 US-90, Baldwin, Florida. Friends and family are invited to gather and celebrate the enduring legacy of a man whose heart was as vast as his love was deep.
Tom’s unexpected passing after an abrupt illness has left a profound void among those who knew him. Yet, the memories of his loving nature, unwavering strength, and heartfelt generosity continue to inspire all who were fortunate to be touched by his life. He will be remembered not only as a pillar of his family and community but as a man who embodied kindness, steadfastness, and a spirit of selfless service.
