Mr. Robert Owen Shumate Sr., age 82 of Bryceville, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2019. Mr. Shumate was born in West Virginia, was a United States Navy Veteran and had been a Nassau County resident since 1975. He was an electrician and was employed by Smurfit Corporation in Jacksonville until the time of his retirement. Mr. Shumate was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and he served as a deacon at Lighthouse Baptist Church in Bryceville, where he was a member. He was a devoted family man with a sense of humor. A hardworking man, he enjoyed doing electrical work for friends and neighbors just to stay active. Mr. Shumate was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish, hunt, go camping or just spend time riding in the woods. He is survived by his wife of fifty nine years: Iona Shumate; son: Robby (Kim) Shumate of Bryceville; daughters: Terri (Jimmy) Boyd of Callahan and DeDe (Doug) Hilaman of Bryceville; grandchildren: Matt (Gayle) Boyd, Brad (Jenny) Boyd, Michelle (Dan) Stewart, Stephanie (Jeff) Waddell, Mark Shumate, Thomas Shumate, Kevin Hilaman, and Max Hilaman; nine great grandchildren; and his brother: Melvin (Jane) Shumate of Salisbury, NC. He was preceded in death by his daughter: Valerie Shumate; parents: Ira and Ora Mitchem Shumate; six brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be held 11:00am, Monday, April 22, 2019 in the chapel of Prestwood Funeral Home with Reverend Joey Rountree and Reverend Matt Boyd officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, Mr. Shumate’s family requests donations be made to the building fund of Lighthouse Baptist Church in Bryceville.
