Mrs. Mildred C. Coleman, age 97, of Baldwin, Florida, passed away Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at her home.
Born at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia on July 14, 1913, she was the daughter of John and Janie Joyner. After her mother died at childbirth, Mildred was raised by her maternal grandparents in Arcadia, Florida, and, in the late 1920s, she moved to Jacksonville where she eventually met her husband, Herbert A. Coleman. Married in 1935, Mr. and Mrs. Coleman resided in Jacksonville until 1949 when they moved to Baldwin with their two young sons, Gary and Jimmy.
Mr. and Mrs. Coleman filled their spare time in the Baldwin United Methodist Church, participating in the choir and in the Boys' Club, among many other church activities. She was also a very active member of the Parent-Teacher Association. Family and friends will fondly remember her cooking, as everyone looked forward to her holiday dinners. Mrs. Coleman loved storytelling and regaled her family members with many tales from her long lifespan. Her stock saying when introducing one of these stories was, "I know I've told this story before, but I love to tell again anyway." Mrs. Coleman could remember countless songs and sang them often.
Mrs. Coleman was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Herbert, in 1998. She leaves behind two sons, Gary Coleman (Iris); James Coleman, Sr. (Fay); five grandchildren, James Coleman, Jr. (Sherryl); Kim Shumate (Robert),David Coleman (Donna), Jason Coleman (Theresa), and Holly Lewerenz (Tobias); six great-grandchildren, Allison Coleman, Mark Shumate, Jonathan Coleman, Thomas Shumate, Nicholas Coleman and Morgan Coleman; four step great-grandchildren, Lindsey Vennard (Joseph) and their son, Corbin, Ben Odom (Kayla), Amanda Karan and Brianna Karan.
Her family will receive visitors from 6-8 pm on Friday at Prestwood Funeral Home in Baldwin, Florida. Funeral services will be at the Baldwin United Methodist Church on Saturday at 11 am. Interment will follow at Riverside Memorial Park, Jacksonville.
