Born in Pine Prairie, Louisiana on April 5th, 1934, Herland lived a life rich in experiences and filled with unwavering patriotism. His journey took him far beyond his Louisiana roots, including a fascinating stint as a French interpreter for the U.S. Navy in French Morocco. This remarkable experience, which he often recounted with vibrant detail, provided a backdrop for his later achievements. At the remarkably young age of 39, Herland, using the GI Bill, earned a Bachelor's degree in teaching, a testament to his dedication to lifelong learning. His professional life was equally diverse, including a successful period running his own locksmith business. He proudly displayed his love for his country by always flying the American flag at his home; a fact that was even highlighted in a local newspaper article celebrating his military service.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Herland was a man of simple pleasures. He was a devoted fan of the Saints, LSU, Jaguars, and Gators, finding immense joy in NASCAR races and watching a challenging round of golf. As a true Cajun, he delighted in the flavors of boudin, savored a perfect cup of coffee, and appreciated a good joke. His generous spirit and warm personality endeared him to countless people.
Herland's faith was a cornerstone of his life, evident in his long-standing memberships at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Mamou, Louisiana, and St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Jacksonville, Florida. He is now reunited with his loving parents, Adam and Melda (Granger) Guillory; his brothers, Allen and Harris; his former wife, Irene; and bonus~stepson, Howard.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories, including his only child, Regina (David Johnson); his adored grandson, David L. Taylor III (Ashlee); his two precious great-granddaughters girls, Aura and Matilda; his bonus~stepdaughter, Barbara (Johnny) Hartley; his beloved friend, Ms. Trudy Roberie; and numerous cousins, including Betty, Billy, Glenn (Agnus/Issac) Guillory, Amanda Thille (Rose/Ethel), and Kim so many more.
A service celebrating Herland's life will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, January 20th, 2025, at St. Anne's New Cemetery (1863 Old Hwy 13, Mamou, LA 70554), with Father Billie Massie officiating. Ardoin Funeral Home of Ville Platte, Louisiana, is assisting with arrangements. While your presence would be deeply appreciated if unable to attend we ask for your thoughts and prayers.
