Born one of seven children into a very tight knit family, he valued family and relationships above all else. When he was a young man he and his wife, Jean moved from Phenix City to Jacksonville, Florida where Jean was from and he remained there until his death. Jerry was many things to many people, he was first and foremost a Christian who had a love relationship with his Heavenly Father and he modeled that relationship in all whom he came in contact with. He was a loving husband who still referred to his bride of 57 years as his "sweetheart", a loving father to their three children and spouses. Jerry was a realtor for many years, a Pastor to many people and the President of Jacksonville Baptist Theological Seminary. Jerry had compassion for others and cared what they were going through in their life, not influenced by their social stature but about their soul and earthly life. Known for his quick wit, he always had a joke for everyone he came in contact with and was always encouraging them. Jerry left behind: wife, Jean W. Powers; three children Cathy (Stewart) Blong, Keith (Robin) Powers, Jr. and Dan (Veronica) Powers; five grandchildren, Chad Shannon, Cortney Pouncey, Tripp Blong, Garrett Powers and Jennie Powers; five great grandchildren; sister, Bobbie Thurlow; brother, Lamar (Ruth Ann) Powers; numerous extended family and friends. Jerry Powers won the fight and finished the race on January 21, 2015, when standing before his heavenly father he heard the words he had preached about most of his life "well done thy good and faithful servant."
