George Treadwell

George Warren Treadwell (91) passed away on Saturday, September 4, 2010, in Bryceville, Florida. He was born to the late Jacob Buffington Treadwell and the former Ocie Viola Tingle on February 9, 1919 in Butts County, Georgia. He is predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Evelyn Marie Sikes Treadwell and his siblings Nannie Mae Culpepper, James L., Amos F. and Austin C. Treadwell and a brother who passed away as a very young child.
George graduated from Sandersville High School in 1935 and served in the U.S. NAVY from 1936 until 1940. He met and married Evelyn in 1940 and reentered the Navy in 1942 to serve until 1945. He and Evelyn built and moved into their home on East 54th Street in 1945. George joined the Jacksonville Fire Department February 1948 and worked until he enlisted in the U.S. ARMY in December 1950, serving in Korea. After serving a total of 11 years in the military he was honorably discharged October 1953 and returned to civilian life in Jacksonville. He resumed his career as a professional firefighter with the Jacksonville Fire Department and retired as a Lieutenant in 1968. Throughout the years he worked for various freight companies to supplement his income and eventually became an owner operator with Mercury Motor Express until his retirement in 1981.
George and Evelyn were long time members of Main Street Methodist Church.
George is survived by his children Warren (Linda) Treadwell, MacClenny, Florida and Wanda (Bill) Surrency, Bryceville, Florida; grandchildren, Warren (Jennifer) Treadwell, Apopka, Florida, Shannon Harris, Jacksonville, Florida, Sheri (Gene) Jackson, Bryceville, Florida, William (Teresa) Surrency, Bryceville, Florida, Julie (Brad) Damiani, Vero Beach, Florida, Heather Treadwell, Jacksonville, Florida, Gerri-Anne (Chris) Wood, MacClenny, Florida, Robert Salsbury, III., Jacksonville, Florida; numerous great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. He is also survived by his dear friend Helen Murray of Spottsylvania, Virginia.
He was a charter member of the Jacksonville Retired Firefighters Association.
The family wishes to thank Kathy White, Georgia Mixson, Betty Phillmon, and Betty Brown for their help in taking care of Daddy in his last years. Also, we wish to thank the staff and caregivers of Northeast Florida Community Hospice.
Pallbearers will be members of the Jacksonville Retired Firefighters Association and the Honor Guard.
Services will be held 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at the First Baptist Church of Baldwin with Rev. Chris Drum officiating. The interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Jacksonville Florida. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 7, 2010
