Mr. Garland G. Whaley Jr., a near lifelong Jacksonville resident, passed away Sunday, November 10, 2024, at the age of 83. Mr. Whaley was a 1958 graduate of Paxon Sr. High School and joined the United States Navy after graduation. Upon completion of his military service, he was employed with Progressive Driver Service in Jacksonville for twenty-five years where he was the Vice President of Operations. He then became involved in planning and laying the groundwork for Old Plank Christian Academy and served as the school's administrator from 2005 until 2017. In his free time, Mr. Whaley loved fishing and traveling, especially to the Smoky Mountains where he enjoyed camping. Mr. Whaley will be greatly missed by those who were touched by his presence. He is survived by his loving wife of sixty one years: Jean Whaley; granddaughters: Ashlie and Amber; greatgrandchildren: Kailton, Kentlie, Kaiden, Kymber, Jaydin, Brooklynn, and Kacin; brothers: Darryl Whaley and Donnie (Sandy) Whaley, all of Jacksonville; sisters-in-law: Barbara Pounds of Jacksonville, Ann (Wayne) Dill of Keystone Heights, and Loretta (John) Sandford of Jacksonville; and brother-in-law: Donnie (Terri) Jacobs of Glen St. Mary. He was preceded in death by his daughter Tammy Lynn Murray; parents: Garland G. and Grace Strader Whaley Sr.; grandchildren: Cosby "CJ" McLendon and Carl Guthrie Pippins; brothers: James Whaley and Chuckie Whaley; sister: Susan Wynn; brothers-in-law: Harry Pounds, Jerry Jacobs Sr. and Ronnie Jacobs; and sisters-in-law: Betty Whaley and Phyllis Jacobs. Funeral services will be held 11:30am, Saturday, November 16, 2024, at Old Plank Road Baptist Church, Jacksonville, Florida with Pastor Larry McGinley and Reverends Deryle Adkison and Terry Williamson officiating. The Whaley family will receive friends beginning at 11:00am, the morning of the service, at the church. Mr. Whaley will be laid to rest at 3:00pm at Riverside Memorial Park, Normandy Blvd. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Mr. Whaley's nurse, Ruth with Accent Health, Ms. Davis APRN with V.A.
